The ThermoShield Program for New Home Construction

The ThermoShield Program is the most comprehensive energy program for new home construction. ThermoShield Certification consists of a three step process!

1. Energy Saving Design/Analysis: By reviewing the blueprints before construction, Thermo-Scan evaluates design specifications with regard to structure, material, thermal performance and heating and cooling loads.

Because of this and other energy saving opportunities identified during analysis, homeowners can typically save up to 28% of their anticipated energy bills.

2. Energy Saving Construction: Multiple inspections are conducted— including framing, insulation and ducts--BEFORE the drywall is installed. After the home is framed, a Thermo-Scan energy technician inspects and “tightens” the home utilizing the latest air sealing techniques. A Thermo-Scan value-added bonus---the first 25' of hot water pipes in the home are insulated.

3. Energy Saving Testing: Before the home is completed it is tested for quality energy efficiency. A “blower door” is used to pull a vacuum on the home to pressure test for air leaks, an infrared camera is used to check insulation and air sealing performance, and airflow at every register in the home is measured to make sure the heating system is balanced and operating properly. This testing ensures lower heating and cooling costs and more confidence in the overall quality of the home.

Home Energy Rating for Newly Built Homes

The Home Energy Rating program is for homeowners who want a comprehensive inspection of their home to ensure that it was built to the standards specified by the builder. The inspection and subsequent rating includes:

“Blower Door” test
Insulation inspection
Window and door inspection
Furnace/air conditioner/water heater efficiency documentation
Lighting audit
Duct leakage test
Energy consumption analysis
$2,000 New Home Federal Tax Credit Inspection/Certification

Total Home Diagnostics Program for High Energy Homes

The Total Home Diagnostics Program was designed to identify the reasons that a home is experiencing high energy bills. The program may include:

“Blower door” test to identify air leakage sites
Insulation level inspection
HVAC Airflow measurement through each supply and return register
Heat loss/gain inspection
Infrared Scan of all walls and ceilings
Written report with recommendations

Home Water Leak Inspections

Thermo-Scan provides inspections and solutions for water leaks in underground water lines, interior/exterior pipes, slab construction, swimming pools and spas. Unlike other companies, Thermo-Scan experts can provide five different tests, guaranteed to locate any type of water leak.

Inspection tools include:
Sound amplification: Most leaks make some level of noise, and the simplest test used is this basic process which amplifies sounds within the human hearing range, making leak locations easier to identify.
Ultrasound: Many leaks are identified by the high pitch sound made when compressed air is run through the water lines. These sounds are identified with Thermo-Scan’s state-of-the-art ultrasound equipment.
Infrared: An infrared test and image identifies and visually assesses temperature differences in concrete, soil, pipes, etc. For example, an infrared image may point to a hot water leak that warms the concrete where the pipe is broken.
Helium Detection: This test injects helium into the pipes under the ground, and trained Thermo-Scan inspectors identify where the helium escapes through a crack in the pipe.
Line Locators: Probably the most well known of line tests, this test is used to identify pipe location under the ground or concrete. After clamping on to a section of pipe, the line locator equipment can follow a transmission sent through the entire local pipeline system.

“Please tell Doug that he hit the proverbial nail on the head when he pin pointed the leak in our hot water boiler system. The plumber drilled down into the concrete floor of our garage exactly where Doug said to look. He quickly found the leak and repaired it.”

- Individual Consumer

“Thermo-Scan has been very instrumental in ensuring the quality and integrity of programs such as PSI’s Smart Saver rebate program; the Low-Income Weatherization program; the Commercial and Small Industrial Energy Efficiency rebate program, to name a few.”
